My big highlight for the Fall 2006 semester was the introduction of 3 gaming courses to the curriculum at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH, USA. The first course is called Creating Games, a general education course in the gen ed area of Creative Thought. It has no prerequisites and will not focus on the use of computing technology in the creation of games. Instead, we will focus on card and board games, examining what makes good game play and so on. The other two courses form a sequence focused on game design and development using GameMaker. The prerequisite for the first course is a course on media in society. There are no technology-based prerequisites for that first course. The prerequisite for the second course is the first course.
I'll be teaching Creating Games this Spring (2007) and will start the game design and development sequence in the Fall 2007 semester. The prospect of teaching these courses is exciting and yet somehow terrifying at the same time.
I look forward to reading about the highlights of other folks.
2006 was big for me and my program here in Atlanta. We celebrated our 1-year anniversary in October, opened our new 16-seat Game Lab in June, and I was able to hire my first full-time faculty member in March. Not to mention the speaking opportunites and panels I was on at a number of conferences in the Southeast.
With one year under our belts, we are already revising the curriculum for the Game Design and Development program at American InterContinental University, with a targeted launch of July 2007. I'm real excited about that. I'm also looking forward to working with the Education SIG this year and the release of a game design textbook I wrote some chapters for.
I'm on top of the world, ma!
For me, 2006 was a year of non-stop events. Whether I was organizing, presenting, or attending as press, my year was filled with activity and fruitful interactions.
March 06: International Conference for the Fantastic in the Arts, Florida
April 06: Popular Culture Association Conference, Georgia; Game Developers Conference, California
May 06: Electronic Entertainment Expo - E3, California
June 06: Northwest Games Festival, Oregon
July 06: Casuality Seattle, Washington; Aboriginal Youth Science Exchange Camp, Ontario
Sep 06: Canadian Game Studies Association Symposium, Ontario
Oct 06: FuturePlay 2006, Ontario
Nov 06: Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace, Quebec; Vancouver International Game Summit Reception, British Columbia
Whew! What's 2007 going to be like?

2006 was a big year for me and Emagination Computer Camps. We created a new pre-college program called Emagination Game Design for teens ages 16-18. It was sold out in 5 weeks and all feedback from participants was positive! A team of great people provided assistance in developing the program, delivering it and helping us to evaluate and make improvements for 2007. We had the opportunity to work with many of those who contributed to our success through educators on the IGDA mailing list and Boston Post Mortem, the Boston chapter of IGDA. Thanks to everyone! I look forward to continuing to work with the IGDA and to contributing to educating young people interested in a career in gaming.
